The Future of Lasik

With so many changes over the past decade, including the use of guided lasers and ultra-thin blades, it is hard to imagine what else can be in the pipeline for LASIK vision correction. It is doubtful that any major changes will occur over the next few years, but you never know.

It is expected that greater advancements for those with severe near- and farsightedness will be developed over the coming years.  Most procedures currently available primarily cater to those with low to mid-range myopia.

Currently, the ICL (implantable collagen lens) is often used to correct severe nearsightedness. The LASIK community is expecting that these lenses will soon be available for use in correcting astigmatism and farsightedness, as well.

Multifocal LASIK is expected to receive FDA approval in the not-too-distant future. This approval will allow those currently wearing bi- and trifocals an opportunity to have LASIK vision correction and toss those corrective lenses aside.

Most, if not all, lasers will have eye-tracking capabilities to help ensure that even the smallest eye movements are followed during surgery. While many lasers are outfitted with eye-tracking capabilities now, it will probably no longer be an option, but a requirement.

The use of wavefront technology also continues to be defined and clarified. Although it is unlikely that it will ever be able to achieve “super vision” for anyone, it does seem to be the right application for helping clear up problems and aberrations in patients who have already had laser eye surgery.

Probably the greatest hope for the future of lasik is that patients will seek out highly qualified laser eye surgeons to perform their laser vision correction instead of going to the lesser skilled ophthalmologists because they can get a cheaper price. It’s your eye sight – isn’t it worth paying a little more for state-of-the-art technology, education, experience and professional care?
