An eye doctor’s appointment can be stressful.. up until the time you get there! It’s very simple, quick, and painless.

You will most likely start out by meeting with a technician or a nurse who will take your medical history and complaints. You will then be run on a couple of diagnostic machines which aide the doctor in your final diagnosis and final prescription. Your vision will be checked and a few more quick tests will be done before the doctor gets in the room with you.

Once the doctor is in the room, he or she will proceed to check you for glasses by putting you up to a machine that looks like a big pair of glasses called a phoropter. This is how your prescription is measured and is a very simple test– you just tell the doctor which lenses he or she puts up that you see the clearest out of. Other than that.. the doc does all the hard work!

You will probably be guided into a machine with a chin rest and a head rest called a slit lamp which helps the doctor see the health of your eyes. Sometimes it includes shining some very bright lights into your eyes that can be annoying but don’t last long. I know it will be tempting to close your eyes, squint, or back away, but try your hardest to be as cooperative as possible.
