which laser eye surgery is best

which laser eye surgery is best
which laser eye surgery is best

My 5 month old daughter has a hemangioma.?

The dermatologist is wanting to put her on Prelone. I have read a little into it and found out that it can stunt growth and slow her motor skills. The first time we went to the dermatologist he didn’t want to give her anything for it at that point. The spot is right under her left eye which is noticably smaller than the right. He said that he wanted to give her this steroid because of how fast the spot had grown since he’d seen her 3 months ago. So i guess my question is , is the prelone the best way to go without doing a laser surgery?

Perhaps the steroid is Prednisone? My youngest had/has two hemangiomas, the larger one just under the right eye. I wanted her on steroids when she was a few weeks old, but couldn’t find a specialist to see her and prescribe steroids until she was two months old. By that time the hemangioma was about two inches in diameter and protruded about an inch.

While there are short term side effects to steroids, stunted growth included, studies have shown that the side effects are not permanent. The stunted growth (if it happens) can last from a few months to years, but kids catch up before puberty. There are also stomach upset issues (sometimes) when the child is taking oral steroids, but usually the doctor will prescribe Zantac or something similar at the same time as prescribing the steroids. I have not heard of motor skill issues.

If the hemangioma is growing quite large, or may interfere with her vision, steroids may be helpful. For some kids, the hemangioma may shrink, but at the very least, it should stop growth (while the child is taking the steroids). Steroids are not effective if the hemangioma has stopped growing.

Laser may be helpful if the hemangioma is only superficial, but if there is a deep component, it will not help with that. You should also try looking at www.birthmark.org, the Vascular Birthmark Foundation. There is some useful information there.
