Laser Eye Surgery does it hurt?

Hi all, Last week I went to the eye hospital and they said I have a small hole in my retina. i have to go back later this week to see what needs to be done with it as it is quite small and laser surgery would be quite hard. I was just wondering if any 1 else had had this and if laser surgery was not able what else could they do?

Also was wondering if i did have surgery how long after it could I wear my contacts again? and does it hurt to have it done? Do they put alot of Anethestic in because at the eye hospital they put a bit in whilst they did the examination but it didnt numb it that much?

Thanks.

First things first, if you have a hole, especially a small hole, getting the laser retinopexy done may not be worth it (retinal health-wise as well). Usually holes are left untreated, especially so if it’s in a nonthreatening position on the retina. Holes have a less than 5% chance of causing a detachment, which is about the same probability of the lasering process causing a retinal detachment. My guess is you’ll just have to have the hole “monitored” every now and then over 6 months by a retinal specialist.
For sure, you’ll find retinal specialists who’ll want to “fix” the hole.
OK, assuming you’ve decided to go ahead with the laser retinopexy… Does the process hurt?
I had a very small retinal tear that I opted to treat, and I experience some pain/discomfort.
Now I never had any topical anesthetic or drops applied to numb the pain, so once the laser was done, I just put on my contacts and sunglasses and drove home.
You might want to avoid physical exertion like running, and just take it easy for a week or two to make sure nothing bad happens, which admittedly is rare.
So do they do something about possible pain? I guess it depends on the hospital or clinic you go to, but it shouldn’t cause bad pain and many say it’s painless even if you don’t have the anesthetic applied to your eye…
