Laser Eye Surgery Consultations
Laser eye surgery consultations are the first step of the process patients undergo when they opt for this type of vision correction. Consultations are a very important stage in the journey as they serve to inform patients about what the surgery will involve, as well as what to expect during the procedure and how to provide themselves with the correct aftercare once it’s all over. Another reason consultations are held is to ensure that the patient is suitable for laser eye surgery because, while most people with vision problems will benefit from the procedure, not everybody is suitable for a variety of reasons that will make it unsafe or ineffective.
During your laser eye surgery consultation, you’ll undergo several tests to determine suitability. These tests are conducted by an optometrist and include examinations of your focimetry – the strength of your glasses to find out your current prescription – as well as an autorefraction test to determine your baseline prescription. Following that, you will also undergo a pentacam test to measure the exact dimensions of your cornea, a wavescan to measure imperfections in your eyes, a standard sight test where you’ll read letters from a sign with and without your glasses, and several other tests to fully discover what exactly you need from your laser eye surgery. Many of the tests are the same as a standard eye test, so you will likely have experienced them before.
Following the tests, you will be told if you are a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery and will then be informed just how the procedure works and what to expect from it. At this point, you will be able to ask any questions you might have about the procedure, such as whether or not it will hurt – your consultant will probably assure you that it doesn’t, although some slight discomfort is not uncommon – and if it can be performed on both eyes at once. You can also ask about payment plans and any other areas regarding the procedure that you’re uncertain about.
You will then be taken through your aftercare instructions where you’ll be told about how to look after your eyes once the treatment is over. It is usual for you to have to wear sunglasses to protect your eyes from light sensitivity following eye laser surgery as well as protective shields at night. At the end of your consultation, you’ll be given the opportunity to ask any further questions before agreeing to undergo the surgery and booking your appointment.
