lasik laser eye surgery complications
lasik laser eye surgery complications
If youve had lasik surgery, did you have any complications?
Im thinking of getting laser eye surgery, I am 20 Y/O. Any suggestions? Thanks
I had lasik surgery almost 3 years ago, when I was 21. I had a very great experience and great results. So I personally did not have any problems but some of the most common ones would be if they did not get your prescription quite right and you have to go back for an enhancement, or if the incision would get infected, or if the flap would re-open on your eye if you accidentally rubbed your eye too hard immedicatly after the surgery, or any number of complications that occurs with ANY eye surgery. However, all these things are rare and few result in any permanent complications if taken care of quickly.
A little run-down of what to expect:
First you’ll need to have a pre-op eye examination so that they can make sure you are an okay candidate for lasik surgery. They will check things like your corneal thickness, eye pressure, retinal health, make sure your prescription has been stable for the past few years, take a topography, and some other things. Please note: If you currently wear contact lenses, you must NOT wear them for at least 1 week before this pre-op exam. Contact lenses can slightly change the shape of your cornea, and you need to leave them out so they can get a true picture for the topography.
You’ll also need to not wear your contact lenses for at least 1 week before the actual surgery, for the same reason.
On the surgery day, most places will give you Valium or some sort of relaxer so that you are calm going into the surgery. So you’ll sit for about 20-30 minutes while that takes effect. Then you’ll go into the surgery room and you’ll only be under the laser itself for a few minutes! It is very, very quick. The doctor I had explained everything he was doing the entire time and I was not nervous at all. You can’t see a thing (your vision is black) and they hold your eyes open with a speculum, but of course, these are totally normal things they do in all eye surgeries. Then after the surgery, they will take you to a different room where you must sit with your eyes closed for 30 minutes. I actually fell asleep from the Valium!! And then your ride picks you up from the surgery center since you really can’t see much at all.
By the evening, I could kind of see a bit, but things were still pretty fuzzy which is totally normal. My eyes just kind of felt like they had a “headache” but other than that, the pain was very minimal. When I woke up the next morning for my follow up with the doctor, I saw 20/20 and was totally pain free. And then you do a weekly follow up, monthly, 3 months, 6 months, and so on.
And I’ve been without glasses or contact lenses since!! Totally worth every penny spent! I love it!
Do note that once you hit that dreaded age of 40, you will still need reading glasses to see up close. The surgery does NOT fix that!
Plus if your eye prescription ever does change down the road, the surgery only fixes your eyes for that day and that time. So that is why they will not do the surgery if your prescription is not stable.
