What exactly does it mean if your vision is -10?

My optometrist tells me that my vision was -10 (before my laser eye surgery) which apparently translates to roughly 20/1000. I understand that that means I was able to see at 20 feet what a normal person sees at 1000 feet, but what does the -10 mean?
