How is laser eye surgery performed? Is it better than lens?

my grandad just had his eyes done and he has eighty per cent vision back which is better than he had before. He is so happy that he doesn’t need his glasses any more and really appreciates how it has turned his life around.
They perform it like this
1) they give you an anesthetic that numbs the eye and the eye is held open by a special instrument as not to blink.
2)they cut on the cornea to create a flap to access the middle layers
3)the surgeon sculpts the middle layers before replacing the flap, this does not hurt and when the flap is replaced it starts to heal immediately
4)your eyes will be gritty light and watery after but they give you transparent eye shields that you need to wear at bed time for five nights. They also advise you bring sunglasses for when you leave
