Cat with sore eyes?
My cat has constantly weeping eyes, he has had swabs taken and blood tests and they were all clear. His eyelids regularly appear red and they water. I don’t know where to go from here but I hate to see him like this. He is currently on maxitrol eye drops which help but they become sore as soon as I stop them.
Has any anyone had similar problems and if so how did you resolve the problem?
Since you said he had tests run and they were clear, I am assuming his eyes are not infected (although maxitrol is a type of antibiotic, so perhaps they are infected?)
So, it might be one of three things :
1. A serious allergy to something inside the house of out in the yard. It could be a particular plant or substance. Do you have a down comforter, strange flowering plants, hobby sawdust, strongly frangranced detergents used on the bed linens, other critters in the house, etc? Do you have a big polleny bush he sits under outside every day? You can try removing anything suspect and see if the eyes improve.
2. A reaction to a toxin or chemical. Alot of small animals have bad reactions to the household chemicals people use because their heads are so low to the ground and their face gets the full dose of fumes rising up from the floor and the couch or bed. Try to use non-toxic cleansers on the surfaces the cat is close to. Use vinegar/water or baking soda/water mixtures to mop the floors and dont use the regular chemical carpet cleaners and shampoos. Use unscented laundry detergent on the bed linens. Also, if you take your cat to a groomer for shampoo or flea dip or if you use flea collars or sprays or even liquid treatments, your cat might be having a bad reaction because all those products can contain some hardcore chemicals. Try a natural pyrethrin powder instead.
3. A disease – there are feline disorders that cause runny, red eyes. Has your cat been tested for chlamydia? Feline chlamydia causes red, runny eyes. Get him tested if he hasn’t been.
When my cat has itchy goopy eyes, I make a weak black tea solution, let it cool, and use a dropper to drip some drops into her eyes. The tea is astringent and mildly antibacterial, so it provides some nice natural relief.
