success of laser eye surgery

Is my eye sight bad for my age?
I’m 14 years old, and the last time I checked my eyes, the power is -1.75.
My mum keeps yelling at me saying that my eyes are really bad but I know a lot of people at my school that are worse than me.
I was also thinking that when I get older, I would get eye laser surgery.
Do you think my mum would completely agree with me?
For those who actually have had the surgery:
Is it expensive and safe?
Will it always be a success?
Are there any risk factors?
I’ve told my parents about the gene thing, since they both have glasses (but my mums eyes are only -1.25) and they don’t believe me.
There is nothing you can do to ‘control’ the level of correction needed for your eyesight. So your mother needs to understand it is out of your control and is actually half HER fault.. as it was part of her genetic code that allowed it. =)
-1.75 isn’t an extraordinary diopter,.. your correction is average among people.. you are correct there are probably plenty of people you know with higher degree’s of correction.
I have no idea if your mother would agree wilaser eye surgerygery, I don’t know her. =)
I have not had laser eye surgery, but have read a bit abou tit.
Expensive , well, depends on what you consider expensive. But a few thousand out of pocket isn’t un-heard of. (can be done much cheaper, but sometimes you do get in ‘skill’ what you pay for.. sometimes not).
There is NO guarantee any eye surgery will be successful. The success vs unsuccessful ratio is very high.. making it a VERY common procedure.
Yes, there are risk factors.. as with any surgery there are risks,.. and especially with anything ablating, and/or adjusting your cornea (among other possible layers of the eye) errors, or accidents can happen.
For the surgery itself,.. take a look here:

I would definitely wait until I were 18-22 before having the surgery, to see where your vision stabilizes as your develop. Also, given that amount of time the procedure will only get that much safer, reliable, and advanced. Likely in the next several years a completely ‘new’ or evolved procedure will be around.
Something I have heard and seen alot of personally and reading anecdotally. Is that many people have reported that after 7+ yrs post laser eye surgery their vision degrading significantly where surgery was/is needed again or corrective lenses (or both).
It either doesn’t seem to be permanent at the moment, or simple age related degeneration is skewing the longterm results of the procedures.
Take care,
