Some LASIK questions?

I am thinking of having LASIK eye surgery on both my eyes at Optical Express (I’m shortsighted), and I’m a bit anxious, so I have some questions…
1. Can you feel anything during the surgery?
2. Are you asleep or awake during the surgery?
3. Can you move your eye during the surgery?
4. Does the surgeon give you a sedative to relax you if you are to stay awake during the surgery?
5. Is it true that you can smell the laser burning you eyes?
6. Can you see the laser beam?

Thank you.

You are awake but you are given a sedative about 20 minutes to a half hour before the procedure. You will feel pressure but your eyes are numb. You can move your eyes, but if you move to much the procedure/laser will stop. You are given fixed areas to look at the entire time of the surgery. I could smell a faint odor (they say it’s the gases from the laser), but it was not unbearable.

My surgeon sat right behind me and counted down the time I had left per eye and was very soothing. He has done over 12,500 refractive surgery procedures so he knew what to say and do to make me feel more comfortable.

As I sat in recovery, I was wondering why I was so nervous, it was painless, quick and easy!

Do your homework and don’t be afraid to ask questions to the surgeon, his staff etc.
