laser eye surgery for children
Is there any help for my child? What are the chance of another child in this situation?
I have twin girls who were born at 25 weeks. One had a detached retina and the other had retina that was detaching.Doctors performed laser eye surgery on the one with the detaching retina and she can see.The other seems to be able to see somewhat because she can walk independently.Sometimes she walks without bumping into something; and she can find a person whether the person is moving or still, talking or quiet. Doctors said she would not walk before 5 but she was walking at 2.5 years. What causes a detached retina and is there any hope and help for the twin who did not receive laser surgery? I researched detached retina but the information seemed to refer to adults rather than children born with the condition. What I feel is that there is hope for my daughter but having her evaluated will be costly. Their father is dead and I am a single parent. I am pregnant now and I am wondering if it is something hereditary and if this child will be born with a condition similar to the twins?
sadly your little girls’ condition was caused by their being so premature; babies born closer to full term are better developed and don’t get detached retinas.
The premature birth wouldhave been caused by their being twins, the one of the way now should go close to the 9 months, so should be alright
what country are you in? what are the social security arrangements? as a widow with a child who is, by the sound of it, legally blind, isn’t there some welfare or medical scheme that would allow you to get her evaluated free? or at a discount? if the partially detached retina can still be reattached, the sooner it is done the better, as the neural pathways from the eye to the brain develop from use in early childhood. The better the retinas, the better these pathways will develop.
I am sure your new child will be born with normal eyesight, and will grow up to be helping and understanding with his sisters.
See what help you are entitled to, to get their eyes improved. Fight for your little ones and God be with you
