A Brief Explanation Of Lasek Eye Surgery
Glasses have reputedly been worn since the end of the 13th century, whilst contact lenses have been in widespread use throughout the UK since the late 1970s. However, recent developments in corrective eye surgery involving the use of cold lasers means that for certain conditions only, there is now a viable alternative to both forms of artificial sight aids.
One relatively new corrective surgery that is growing in popularity is Laser-Assisted-Epithelial Keratomileusis, also known as LASEK. It can be used to correct astigmatism and long sightedness or short sightedness, mainly for people who have flat or thin corneas. LASEK eye surgery is an alternative treatment to the more common LASIK (Laser-Assisted-In-Situ Keratomileusis) treatment for people with thicker corneas. Once performed it removes the need for the patient to wear either contact lenses or glasses for a range of conditions.
People aged over 40 years-old who require reading glasses may still need to wear them as the eye’s natural lens cannot focus quickly enough between far and distant objects, even after receiving LASEK treatment. This looks set to change in the near future but for now presbyopia is unfolasektely not a condition that can be improved by LASEK surgery.
First performed at The Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in the USA in 1996, LASEK surgery is now widely performed throughout the UK. The procedure itself is relatively routine for an ophthalmic surgeon, which doesn’t take too long to perform and is also done with a minimum amount of discomfort for the patient.
First, the eye is opened and anaesthetic drops applied. Next, without detaching it completely the surgeon gently rolls back the surface area of the cornea’s outer layer. It is at this point that the laser is applied – as computer controlled pulses of blue cool light – onto the surface of the cornea. This procedure re-shapes the outer layer of the cornea and is used to correct astigmatism impressions or to correct short or long sightedness.
Once the laser has been turned off, the surface area of the cornea’s outer layer is restored to its original position and a bandage contact lens applied. After the anaesthetic of LASEK surgery wears off this may cause a little discomfort or the patient may feel some mild sensations, but only for a period of 24 – 48 hours.
Although a popular procedure, LASEK treatment is not suitable for everyone and eye treatment advice on whether any type of laser eye treatment is suitable for them should first see a professional ophthalmic surgeon for a consultation.

health insurance in the U.S.?
Hello! I do not know exactly how things work in the United States with insurance. 1) Is it mandatory? 2) Secondly, if I have insurance and I suppose you want a procedure not covered by insurance, such as laser eye surgery (choice) or say a caesarean section. If I am willing to pay for the same procedure, the doctor may refuse to try to deny the procedure simply because I am sure this is not pay? Am I allowed to pay out of pocket if I'm ready or liability insurance Civil? Category
1. Not unless you live in Massachusetts. 2. The doctor can not refuse to treat all because the insurance does not pay, except they have a contract with the insurance company does business with clients in the insurance company. I can also say, not covered by LASIK surgery insurance. And doctors can refuse to do the caesarean section if it is "against" – that is, if they believe will create more problems than it's worth the sentence. But you can always find another doctor willing to do it for money. You can pay out of pocket for medical treatment. And physicians increasingly, at least in my area, go "we do not accept any type of insurance -. Cash only"
