Traditional Lasik: Still Looking Good
New developments in ophthalmology have created a number of variants of refractive eye surgery. Traditional Lasik is one such refractive eye surgical method through which vision is corrected. The term ’traditional’ is used in the name of this surgery to distinguish this method from its newer counterparts such as IntraLasik or Wavefront Lasik.
The difference lies in the type of laser (alasiklated technologies) that are used in such surgeries. Traditional Lasik, also called ’standard Lasik’ or ’conventional Lasik,’ is the original form of laser surgery, first performed in 1989.
The laser used is a very basic type. This surgery is deployed to correct vision disorders such as farsightedness, nearsightedness, astigmatism and presbyopia. It is cheaper than other forms of Lasik surgery.
It has been found that patients who suffer from nystagmus, dry eyes, early cataract stages or corneal scars have no need for Wavefront Lasik and are better off with Traditional Lasik surgery. Both these forms of Lasik surgery have been approved by the US FDA.
Method of Traditional Lasik
One of the oldest forms of laser-assisted surgery, Lasik stands for Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis. This method involves cutting a flap of the corneal tissue with a special type of blade known as microkeratome. The flap is usually between 100 to 180 micrometers thick. Next, the targeted tissues are removed from the corneal stroma. This removal is executed with the help of a special kind of laser beam. This laser beam is called an excimer.
What distinguishes this surgery from other variants is the method in which the corneal flap is cut. However, in IntraLasik surgery, the flap is also cut with the help of the excimer laser.
Benefits of Traditional Lasik Surgery
Traditional Lasik surgeries are considered the best way to get rid of contact lenses or glasses. Additionally, this surgery is quite painless and the use of laser makes the process very simple. Patients can go home on the very same day after completion of surgery. The recovery period too is much shorter. Â
