flying after eye laser surgery
Glasses/Contact lenses whilst flying Fast jets?
Why are pilots not allowed to wear such eye correction? I have seen some pilots wear glasses before flying and the eye defect has prehaps happened years after their medical. Would laser surgery be considered…Thanks
I was turned down because of this.
The rules state that if, after being accepted for training and attending Cranwell for aircrew selection, you were to walk into an opticians and they said you needed glasses then its perfectly acceptable and you can continue training. However if you were to walk into a careers office wearing glasses they wont accept you under any circumstances.
Its not a case of safety, I did 2 weeks work experience at Marham, and 2 thirds of the aircrew (pilots and WSO’s) wore glasses.
Trying to get an answer out the RAF on this subject is like trying to get blood from a stone. They know this is wrong but they wont change the rules. I ended up going to my mp to get an answer.
My dad did 26 years in the RAF and he never knew this rule because he always saw Pilots putting on special glasses.
Laser surgery would not be accepted because they reckon it can go wrong.
The Royal Navy get the RAF to train their pilots so dont go there either, its the same rules (although they have retired all their sea harriers from frontline ops). You dont just get picked to fly fast jets though, they take all applicants as potential fast jet crews and then stream them onto rotary (helicopters) or multiengine (C130, C17, VC10, Tristar, Sentry, etc…) if they arent good enough in training.
You might be ok for NCO aircrew though, flying in the back of nimrods and AWACS. I was offered that but it just wasnt the same for me. Its possible to get a commission if you have a degree or are very good in training. Start as a Sergeant and its better pay than a pilot officer’s wages.
Phone up Cranwell and let me know what anwers you get (if any). Would be interested to know if the rules have been changed.
Good luck.
