I am an ‘Albino’ will I be able to get laser eye surgery?

Hi,

I have albinism, I don’t particularly like being called an Albino but I thought it would attract more peoples attention in the title. I dream to be a pilot and am really really counting on being able to purchase laser eye surgery later on in life, as I am 15 at the moment. The trouble with Albinism is that apparently my eyes are separately connected to the brain as apposed to joining in the middle.

Thanks for any professional opinions anyone is able to give; I have tried consulting a real optician but they quite literally slammed the door i n my face and said come back when I’m 18 but to be honest choosing a career path at the age of 18 is a bit too late; of I can’t get laser eye surgery I’ll give up on pilot training.

Consult with a general ophthalmologist. An optician would not usually be able to tell you unless you have obvious visual problems (many people with albinism do) which would exclude you.

Since you have albinism, chances are good that you have already seen an ophthalmologist at some point in your life. Call them and ask your questions about your particular case.

You have a right to know, and to get your questions answered. Many health professionals may think you already know the answers since you have grown up with albinism.

However, since you are coming into the age where you will begin making your own health and career decisions, asking things you don’t know is not optional–it is essential.

Good luck in whatever you do.
