do FML corticosteroid eye drops “take out the red” veins in your eyes?
are they considered vasoconstrictors… which are bad!
Fluorometholone (or FML) is a ophthalmic suspension drug that you get by prescription to help with inflammation problems, such as those caused with infections or allergies. FML really isn’t a vasoconstrictor but rather, it just stops the inflammation process in the first place. If you stop inflammation, it makes your eyes less red because your veins are no longer inflammed. It also just makes you eye more comfortable overall during an infection, because it helps to tone down the body’s response (since it usually over-reacts anyway).
And for the record, there is nothing bad about vasoconstrictors, such as Visine. The only time they get to be a problem is when people use them too much. Most people don’t bother to read the label on Visine and just put the drops in whenever they feel like, which usually is too often. If you use a vasoconstrictor too often, you will actually have a rebound effect which will eventually make your eyes look way WORSE than when you started. This is why you should ALWAYS read labels for the proper dosage!
Note that artificial tears are not like Visine. You can use artificial tears as often as you like, because all they do is lubricate. However, if you do use them a ton, it’s best to you a preservative-free artifical tear, as some people can be sensitive to preservatives if you are using them a ton.
